For many of us, living in this tech-speed world can make waiting very hard. We have gotten used to certainty and control, as well as immediate results and answers at the click of a button. Yet, waiting often means stepping into the unknown, which stirs up anxiety in our hearts. In addition, the need to exercise control over our inclination to act on impulse adds to the frustration and despair.
In Psalm 40:1-3 (NLT), David writes:
David found himself in a despondent situation, crying out to the LORD for help amid his despair. We, too, will encounter times of waiting—whether due to a loved one's health struggles, wayward children drifting away from the LORD, strained relationships, or other challenges. Like David, we yearn for God's answers and deliverance.
In Hebrew, the word for "wait" is qavah, which means to look for, hope, expect, or bind together like a cord. This conveys a sense of trustful anticipation, not passive idleness. Waiting on the LORD means:
As David waited with patient expectation, God responded. God heard his prayer, turned to him, lifted him from the muddy pit, set his feet on a rock (a firm place vs. sinking feeling), and gave him a new song of praise to God. David's response became a testimony that inspires others to put their trust in the LORD (v.3). Likewise, when we respond with patient waiting, we can be an encouragement to those around us.
Waiting on the LORD is an act of faith and trust. It may not be easy, but it always leads to renewed strength, divine blessings, and a deeper intimacy with God. How can we wait well?
As we wait on the LORD, we will discover that waiting is not wasted time; it is a sacred space where God works deeply within us—moving from despair to delight in God's faithfulness.

大卫著的诗篇写道：
大卫回想自己曾陷入了沮丧的境地，在绝望中向主呼求帮助。我们何尝不是这样呢？有人因至亲生病、有人因孩子任性逐渐远离 神，或者感情纠葛等等问题。我们如同大卫迫切地呼求 神的答复和拯救。
经文里的“等候”一词在希伯来原文里作“qavah”，引申为“寻找、希望、期待，或(绳索)绑紧”的意思。“等候”在这里就显出一丝坚韧意志，而非消极被动。等候耶和华的意思是：
大卫正安静等候 神的当儿， 神回应了。 神垂听了他的祷告，转向他，从泥沼里把他拉出来，使他站在磐石上(类比稳妥和下陷的处境)，又赐他新歌赞美 神。大卫的反应使其他人看见了也信靠 神(第3节)。同样地，我们若安静等候 神、回应祂的拯救，就在周遭人们眼中成为活生生的见证。
等候耶和华是信心的操练，这并不容易，却往往使那等候 神的人重新得力、经历 神的恩赐与同在。我们等候 神的时候该做什么呢？
我们若等候 神就会发现：等候 神的时间并非毫无意义，而是 神在人里头工作的神圣契机—使人脱离绝望，因 神的信实欢欣。
