ThriveSg: Creatives Collaborate for Mental Health (CCMH)

Your world needs your art. Do good & help others with it!

Charlotte Sim

(In collaboration with Charlotte Sim of @thesplendours)

Hi, I’m Charlotte. I’m an artist and graphic designer, and I run The Splendours,  a creative small business creating art and content that encourages you to slow down, be more thoughtful about life, and seeks to infuse beauty into your everyday living.

Living in this world can really get us down. It’s filled with bad news, heartbreak and brokenness. At the same time, there is still so much goodness and beauty worth highlighting and celebrating. It is my hope that my creations act as a bridge that points you to the things worth living for. It is also my hope to create a community that celebrates the creative process in each others’ lives.  I try to bring some aspect of contemplation into the art or products I create by writing thoughtful prompts to accompany them too.

So far, apart from running my small business, I’ve been collaborating with ThriveSg on a few fronts. I’ve had the privilege of helping to design and illustrate some of @thrivesg.tribe Instagram posts, as well as planning the annual #LookingOutReachingOut campaign direction and sponsoring a set of postcard prints from my shop. Behind the scenes, I’ve also had the exciting opportunity of helping design ThriveSg’s Emotional Resilience Transformational Journey workbook and certificates!

What motivated or inspired you to collaborate with ThriveSg?

Before I started my collaboration partnership with ThriveSg, I was a recipient of ThriveSg’s counselling service. I experienced first-hand the benefits of working on my mental health and the importance of it as it affected every area of my life. As such, the transformation in my own mental health struggles shaped my values around the importance of mental health and I desired to reflect that in the work that I put out. The collaboration was a natural next step for me as I bounced back from a season of mental health struggles and gained confidence in my identity as a creative. I really wanted to give back and encourage others in their journey of growth, because I was there before too.

How have these collaborations added value to you or your business?

The main thing about these collaborations is that it doesn't just add value to my business, but it first adds value to me, as a person, and as a creative.

When I read through the stories and the educational content on self-compassion, in preparation for creating the graphics or illustrations, I must first internalise and chew on what’s being written before I can pour out a visual that best communicates the concept.

Sometimes, it’s really not easy! But that’s where the experience stretches me beyond cliche depictions and pushes me to consider how to employ shapes, colours, motifs to the best of my ability.

Reading the content in preparation for the visuals also reinforces the concepts I’ve learned through counselling (we’re forgetful people!) and bolsters all the work my therapist and I have done together in my mental health journey.

Of course there are other benefits, like attracting like-minded people to my creative small business as well. But the bigger benefit of this collaboration is that it helps me become a better person, a better creative, and a better small business owner.

What encouragement would you give to inspire other Creatives to collaborate for a good cause!

I believe that a better world and a more supportive culture for mental health really does begin with these small steps. I’d like to encourage any creative reading this that your art matters, and you can do a whole lot of good when you consider how it can better serve others around you.
