Thirsty Small Group Devotional

Overview

Thirsty Small Group Devotional

Ryan Berg

This is a series of five small group lessons written to accompany the Thirsty Devotional written by Rick James and available from Cru Press. These small group lessons were originally written by Ryan Berg for the staff of the Ocean City, NJ Summer Mission.

How to use these lessons:

These lessons work best when used alongside the Thirsty Devotional, which you can purchase from Cru Press or download a free PDF here. The idea is that the participants would work through the specific lesson during the week and come prepared for the group time. If you can, ask every person in your group to purchase a copy of the devotional. You may want to buy them as a group to save on shipping costs.

The Thirsty devotional is a 14-day devotional, but the supplemental studies just cover 5 of those days from the devotional. So, it is designed to be a 5-week small group curriculum. The lessons covered are:

  1. Secure
  2. Empowered (this lessons includes an attachment)
  3. Walking
  4. Naked (this lesson includes an attachment)
  5. Power for Holiness

Warning: These lessons require some advanced preparation from the leader. They are not meant to be “plug and play.”  The leader will need to spend time looking over the lessons to be prepared for the discussion. You may find that there is more material than you can cover, or that you want to add some additional discussion questions. But, you will want to do the work of preparing ahead of time for these studies.

Remember: Just hearing information is not learning. People need to interact over information and do something with it in order to learn it. So, make sure you allow plenty of time and opportunities for discussion.

One last thought...We can’t stress enough how crucial it is that people understand the person and work of the Holy Spirit. That’s why this study is so crucial and recommended. When one knows and understands the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we experience His power to overcome sin, to share Christ with our friends, and to walk with God for a lifetime.

As Charles Stanley once said, “You were never meant to live the Christian life on your own, you never can and you never will.”  or, as Paul put it, “Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal through human effort?” (Galatians 3:3).

So, we hope you enjoy leading these studies and we pray that they lead to life change for you and those you lead!
