“An object at rest stays at rest unless acted on by an outside force.”
This law of inertia applies to people, not just to objects. People tend to resist change unless there’s a force or motivation that pushes them to do something different.
Change often comes with the risk of failure or harm. Whether you want to become healthier, learn to handle conflict better or change careers, the greatest changes tend to require the greatest risks. Therefore, they also demand the most courage and motivation.
Sometimes obstacles to change build up, even if just in our minds, to the point that we really can’t take the first step toward change on our own. In these cases, we need others to come alongside us and help us overcome these obstacles.
Many of us long to have people in our lives whose love will give us the courage and motivation we need to take steps toward change — people who will love us as we are, but who also want to see us make the changes necessary to live up to our full potential. If we try to change and fail, they won’t stop loving us. They will be right there with us to pick up the pieces.
Love is one of the most powerful motivators for change. True love can give us the courage to take the risks we need to change.
True love refuses to give up, even in the face of failure or hardship. It chooses to keep loving, even when the other person doesn’t seem very lovable.
This type of love from another person is one of the most powerful forces in the world, but I think there is one force that is even more powerful: the love of God.
Whether or not you believe there is a God, consider hypothetically for a moment that there is. Imagine how amazing and motivating it would be to have the most powerful being in the universe love you.
What would it be like to know that God loves you unconditionally and cares about you? How would it motivate and inspire you to change?
Do you feel like your next step is impossible? Discover how even Jesus wrestled with the difficulty of His defining moment.
