What is it?
Many people feel that to be effective in evangelism they must memorize a complex illustration and a multitude of verses, but the gospel can be powerfully shared when it is done with love, clarity, and simplicity.
One-Verse Evangelism is a simple, interactive way to share Christ’s love conversationally and visually. It is based on asking questions and sharing. It’s easy to learn because it uses just one verse. And since it can be shared in just 10 or 15 minutes, it enables you to be sensitive to peoples’ busy schedules.
Below is a 4 week, 10 minute supplement for a Bible study, ministry team, or discipleship group that will help your group learn to share the gospel simply and conversationally.
What to do
Print: Print the One-verse Evangelism article (print 1/person).
Teach yourself: Read the One-Verse Evangelism article and teach yourself how to explain the gospel by illustrating Romans 6:23. (Don’t worry, it’s really easy.) But talk through and illustrate Romans 6:23 with a friend or staff member at least once before teaching your group. This will give you valuable feedback, experience, and confidence as you lead.
WEEK ONE
Intro : Introduce the One-Verse Evangelism concept using the above description.
Read : Romans 6:23.
Memorize : Give everyone 3 minutes to memorize Romans 6:23 on their own.
Recite : After the 3 minutes is up, ask members to repeat as much as they can from memory in groups of 2 or 3.
Next week : Ask the group to memorize the verse and let them know that you will be asking everyone to repeat the verse from memory for the next 3 weeks.
WEEK TWO
Read : Romans 6:23.
Memorize : Give the group 2 minutes to memorize (or re-familiarize) the verse on their own.
Recite : After the 2 minutes is up, ask each member to repeat it from memory.
Demonstrate : Next, as the leader, demonstrate with a group member what a Romans 6:23 conversation might look like based on the One-Verse Evangelism illustration in the article. ( As previously noted, this requires teaching this to yourself beforehand! )
Hand out the One-Verse Evangelism article
Next week : Ask students to be prepared to write out and converse through the One-Verse Evangelism diagram next week.
WEEK THREE
Recite : Each student repeats Romans 6:23 from memory.
Practice : Pair students together and allow each to take turns conversing and illustrating Romans 6:23.
WEEK FOUR
(Essentially repeat week 3, but repetition aids learning!)
Recite : Each student repeats Romans 6:23 from memory.
Practice : Pair students together and allow each to take turns conversing and illustrating Romans 6:23.
Celebrate! Now students know the essence of the gospel and can share it simply and conversationally! Yay!
