More students plan to go on our summer mission trips than ever before, according to statistics collected from the Campus Ministry this week.
Between May and August, 3,581 college students are heading to over 220 different locations all over the world.
Sent to 6 different continents from 1 to 10 weeks, students have the opportunity to see the world and experience new adventures while encountering real-life training and opportunities for evangelism.
With trips ranging from Albania to Boston, applicants could apply to practically any place on earth. Students could even travel to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., to become cast members while working for Disney in an effort to spread the gospel at the “Most Magical Place on Earth.”
Over the past 6 years, the numbers have hovered between 2,400 and 2,800; but this year, the marketing team for summer mission trips introduced new strategies that have paid off.
“We started promoting, as early as a year before,” says Summer Project Coordinator Pam Outlaw. Utilizing social networks like Facebook have proven to be an effective tool, she says. “We created a fan page on Facebook and had a huge push to invite friends to the page.”
A variety of reasons contributed to the boost. “I think that the biggest reason for our increases,” says Campus Ministry leader Dan Allan, “has to do with students and staff members doing a better job than ever inviting their friends into this life-changing environment for the expansion of the gospel and personal growth.”
