Our Life at the CrossRoads programme is an HIV intervention strategy and Character development programme, designed to assist youth between 11-16yrs to make wise choices. We have implemented it in all secondary schools in Tobago (funded by THA), and in approximately 10 schools in Trinidad.
CrossRoads is a highly interactive program created by educational, medical and youth services professionals. The curriculum, which teaches life skills and character development, can be presented during an average school year. CrossRoads presents a unique risk-avoidance message. The main reason HIV and STDs continue to thrive across the globe is because people make poor choices and engage in high-risk behaviour. They need strong character and the ability to make good choices in order to most effectively avoid the devastation that the disease brings. The CrossRoads strategy, by emphasising healthy relationships, systematically helps youth build good character, so they can avoid whatever high-risk behaviours they might face.
Although CrossRoads is used most often as a direct response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, its focus on character and life skills development has also made it an effective solution to other societal crises, such as violence, drug abuse, teen pregnancy and joblessness.
The FamilyLife ministry was started in Trinidad and Tobago by Steve and Cecile Mohamed in 1999. It is currently headed by Russel and Joelle Aching.
