Hearing God's Voice

Does God really speak to us today in an intelligible voice?

During my first ten days after moving to college, my roommate and I conceived a brilliant plan that involved us getting drunk every night. On the tenth night of this escapade, I went up to my room and sat on my bed. While there, a voice suddenly spoke to me. Maybe that happens to some people when they are inebriated, but this was different. This was an internal audible voice that wasn’t my own.

The person speaking was very kind but very direct. He said something to the effect that He was giving me a choice; I could either choose to do whatever I wanted, or I could choose to follow Him. I chose to follow Him. That was the first time I recognized God’s Voice and this began my journey of hearing Jesus.

Jesus says in John 10:27,“My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.” Jesus is speaking today (Heb 3:7). To follow Jesus dynamically, not just academically, we must listen, discern, and respond.

God will never say anything to you that contradicts His holy, revealed word. Therefore, know your Bible well and another spirit, the world, or the flesh won’t lead you astray.

God speaks in many different ways. Only once in a while I have heard clearly the internal audible voice. Often, He speaks more subtly, but I have grown in my sensitivity to how He speaks to me in various ways.

So how do you listen to and discern His Voice? Jesus leads us as we listen and follow. We can lead others and our own lives as we follow Him.
