Role 2: Introducing the Guide

The Guide: Showing the way to God

Key skills: Sharing your spiritual story and explaining the gospel.

We know 2 facts: Everyone is on a spiritual journey and God is already at work. As Christians, we are given the privilege of joining people on their spiritual journeys and becoming a part of what God is doing.

When you discover spiritual openness in conversations by being an explorer, it can be both exciting and daunting. It is normal to wonder, "What do I do now?"

It is time to transition to the next role of a CoJourner: the guide.

When you act as a spiritual guide, you lead people to Jesus. You will help them understand the gospel and their experiences along the way.

There are 3 tools that are your basic equipment as a guide:

Christian Community

A healthy Christian community can have a profound influence in a person's journey to Christ. This experience allows them to participate in an environment that demonstrates God's love and truth.

Invite people into your Christian community. Say, "Hey, I'm going to _________. I really enjoy it because of ____________. Would you like to come along?" (But don't forget to think ahead so you can fill in the blanks.)

Your Story

The prerequisite for being a guide is first-hand experience. A good guide has personal knowledge of the journey ahead.

If you know Jesus as your personal Savior and Lord, you qualify as a guide. This is an exciting part of CoJourners. After you have explored the lives and experiences of others, they will be naturally interested in your story.

It is important for you to plan ahead about how you will explain your story. Keep it short and focus on giving a practical example of how someone else could know God.

The Gospel

The gospel is "the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…" (Romans 1:16, New International Version).

But how do you begin? You ask permission.

Once you've discovered some spiritual openness and shared a bit of your own story, ask "Can I show you something that has really helped me understand this?"

If you are not in a good setting to talk, ask if you can set up a time to grab coffee or lunch.

Once you have permission, use a short and clear gospel presentation like How to Know God Personally.

By inviting people into Christian community, telling your story and explaining the gospel, you will guide people to Jesus.
